World Literature
Mrs. Amy Floyd: afloyd@paulding.k12.ga.us
World Literature Course Description: World Literature is a multi-genre survey of short stories, poetry, non-fiction, plays, and novels. Students will gain experience in reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking while studying a range of diverse literature. The works are examined in the cultural, philosophical, and political climates in which they were created. The goal is for students to better understand and analyze the multiple dimensions of the human experience by examining this experience through literature. Students will study and practice literary analysis as they expand upon previously acquired skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language. The course will emphasize the composition process (prewriting, drafting, revising, and editing).
Curriculum Schedule: For the 2024-25 school year, the state English curriculum, the Georgia Standards of Excellence, is fully implemented. Unit novels will be provided for students. In addition to class novels, students will explore a variety of genres, including non-fiction and poetry.
Georgia Standards of Excellence

Late Policy for Homework, Papers, and Projects
Late Assignments: Late work will receive a late penalty of -1 point for each day it's late. An assignment that is 10 days late will have 20 points deducted from the final grade; if it's 30 days late, it will have 30 points deducted. NO ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER 30 DAYS. However, essays written and due at the end of class will not be accepted late.
Assignment submission: Nearly every assignment in this class will be turned in through Canvas. Papers must be typed in MLA format and turned in as a .docx. Handwritten papers, screen shots of your phone, and pictures of your paper are not accepted and will result in a zero until the proper file type is turned in. Late penalties apply. I DO NOT ACCEPT EMAILED WORK.
Absences: It is the student’s responsibility to see the teacher before class to schedule make-up quizzes or tests. Students should check Canvas to see what was missed. Students receive 1 day for every 1 day absent to turn in make-up work. Always write ABSENT and the date of the absence in the comments section of ALL make-up work turned in on Canvas. Failure to do so may result in lowered score.
Previously Assigned Work and Absences: If you are absent from class but attend any of your other classes in the building, you are expected to turn in your English assignment. So, if you have an English paper due and miss class but come to school later in the day, the paper is still due and will result in a point deduction if not turned in that day.
Attendance and Make-Up Policies: Please refer to the student handbook for board policies.
Mastery Plan
Lessons are designed with remediation in mind for those who need it. When a student fails to meet a course standard, options will be available for the student to meet that standard. These options include (but are not limited to) significant revisions of essays or narratives. Formative quizzes are not eligible for remediation. Proof of mastery is always at the teacher’s discretion. I don't not give extra credit.
Remediation: Students who fail a summative writing assignment will have one opportunity to make corrections within 3 days and resubmit the assignment for an improved grade. The assignment must be submitted within the 14-day grace period. Students may not use class time for making corrections but are welcome to come to tutoring for remediation.
Tutoring: My tutoring hours are currently Monday through Thursday from 8:00 to 8:30 and 3:30 to 4:30. Students can sign up for a time on my online schedule Links to an external site..
Grades and Online Access
Online Grades: Student grades and attendance can be accessed through the Paulding School District website at www.paulding.k12.ga.us Links to an external site.. Complete directions for the use of the Infinite Campus grade system will be available on the site. Attendance is current and may be viewed at any time.
Canvas: The gradebook in Canvas is not the same as the gradebook in Infinite Campus. When students miss a deadline, Canvas automatically assigns a zero for the missing grade and stays a zero until it is graded. The first point of contact for missing grades is the student. Grades recorded in Canvas will automatically be transferred to Infinite Campus nightly.
Students may access Canvas for course resources and assignments throughout the semester. Access to Canvas can be made through the Paulding School District website: (Parent Portal / Parent Portal Support (paulding.k12.ga.us) Links to an external site.. Parents are encouraged to create their own Canvas account:

Academic Dishonesty/Plagiarism
No student shall receive, attempt to receive, knowingly give or attempt to give unauthorized assistance in the preparation of any work required to be submitted for credit (including examinations, essays, themes, term papers, etc.). All written work will be submitted through Canvas. I will use AI analysis tools or checkers for plagiarism review; the use of ChatGTP and other AI tools are not permitted in this class. Your content should be your original work, synthesizing your research and arriving at your own conclusions. Any student caught cheating, plagiarizing, or improperly using tools such as AI will automatically receive a “0” for the assignment. There will be NO OPPORTUNITY GIVEN to make up the failing grade. Know that the faculty and administration take academic dishonesty very seriously. If a student feels compelled or pushed to commit an infraction or is unsure of an assignment, please seek immediate help from the instructor.
